Day 4 – Destination Message [14-Day Power Mindset Challenge]

👋 Welcome to Day 4 of Team Asijiki’s free 14-Day Power Mindset Challenge!

💡 Each day for 14 days we give you 1 lesson and an action to complete that will make you think, open your mind and better prepare you for change in any aspects of your life.

Today’s lesson is your Destination Message

We are going to write your Destination Message by taking a trip down your future lane.

You will be designing your fantastic new future and your vision for your life over the next year.

With every journey, you undertake you need a strong sense of where you want to get to. A clear picture to guide you on that path.

Have you heard of the 1985 Steven Spielberg classic movie Back to the Future with Michael J Fox? If you have not seen it yet you must!

Just like the character in the movie Marty McFly we are going to visit ourselves from the future using our Destination Message to communicate what our future looks like and make it brighter.

The message shows and tells you exactly what you want to happen with your journey over the next year. Think of it as “Future You” that travels back in time to tell you what it’s like in detail.

The Destination Message tells you what you want.

So in order to get that vision into a concrete and useful outcome for you, we will start with the question:

What do you want out of life?

Most people will tend to focus on what they do not want rather than what they DO want.

For example:

  • I don’t want to be fat.
  • I don’t want to feel unfit.
  • I don’t want to take all these medications.
  • I don’t want to feel unattractive and unsexy.
  • I don’t want to feel out of control of my eating.

Would it not be easier to imagine what you DO want? Can you picture it?
So let’s rather reframe things and flip the script:

  • I want to be lean and healthy with some muscle.
  • I want to be in better shape — strong, fast, flexible, agile, physically capable.
  • I want to take fewer medications or get off my medications entirely.
  • I want to feel attractive and confident.
  • I want to eat normally, intuitively, and sanely. I want to nourish my body with wise and balanced food choices.

Clearly defining our goals in terms of moving towards what we want rather than away from what is causing us pain is more inspiring and exciting. It also starts to give us a bit more direction for taking action.

Think of it kind of like a brainstorming process that helps us better visualise our potential and gives us the beginnings of our blueprint to success.

So now that we are all excited, let’s get started on the message.

Today’s 🎯 Action:

Forget all of your fears and doubts for a moment and close your eyes and imagine yourself in 12 months time.

What might that future look like? Where do you want to be? What do you want to be doing? How do you want to feel?

Now visualise yourself returning from the future with your message. What would that message look like IN DETAIL?

In a year from today, in an ideal world:

  • Where do you want to be?
  • What do you want to be doing?
  • What do you want to feel?
  • What adventures do you want to be having?

There is no “right way” to do this. You aren’t being graded or judged on what you write here. This is purely for your own benefit.

Don’t worry about how “realistic” this is right now. Use your imagination and go wild. Whether it’s abseiling off a mountain, running a marathon, winning a competition, doing an obstacle race, completing 50 5km runs or just fitting into your old jeans. Imagine who and where you could be one year from now.

Then capture that in a way that inspires you and that you can easily refer back to.

Here are some ideas.

Write a letter from your future self and actually get it delivered at the end of the year? Or type it up and send yourself an email using a Gmail tool like Boomerang. Alternatively, keep it old school and write it on on a piece of paper and put it in a drawer or in your safe.

Collect and clip photos from magazines then grab some glue and make a vision board. Surf the web to find inspiration and create a Pinterest board. Put up a calendar or draw your pictures. Call up a friend and make a ridiculous bet.

Imagine it. Capture it. Have fun with it.

RECORD IT!

And make it just a little more real today and then every day this year.

Do something that your future self will thank you for!
